Jeanette enjoys sharing what she’s learned about the business and craft of writing. She is available to present the following workshops for writing groups, RWA chapters, and conferences, both virtually and in person. Please contact her to discuss other potential topics.

Goal-setting For The Chronically Disappointed Writer

(To be presented at NECRWA and RWA National conferences in 2019)
Self-help gurus and life coaches will tell you to think positively and success will fall into your lap. But if that worked, would they still have jobs? If thinking positively hasn’t gotten you on any best-seller lists, maybe it’s time to try something new. In this hands-on, interactive workshop, multi-published hybrid author and experienced self-re-inventor Jeanette Grey will challenge you to probe your darkest depths for the sources of your disappointments and resentments in your writing career. Then, we’ll tackle those issues head-on, discussing the fallacies that keep people barking up the wrong trees, and strategizing how to both harness and silence the Debbie Downers that live in all of our heads. Participants will leave armed with new areas for improvement, refreshed serenity to accept what they cannot change, as well as actionable, concrete goals for how to make progress and find more joy in their careers—and their lives.

The Art And Science Of Writing Deep POV

(Presented at Chicago Spring Fling and Romance Writers of America in 2016)
Readers crave it. Agents and editors demand it. Writing in Deep POV puts your readers in the minds of your characters, giving them the escapist, immersive experience they’re looking for every time they pick up a new book. In this workshop, RITA-finalist author Jeanette Grey explores both the art and the science of writing in Deep POV. Learn new ways to get into the heads of your own characters and bring their stories to life, while also picking up tricks for refining your writing and revising with an eye to creating the richest, deepest POV possible.

Size Does Matter: Crafting Fantastic Fiction At Any Length

From five page vignettes to eighteen volume epic fantasy series, the power of fiction doesn’t need to be limited by its word count.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the creative freedom that comes from tackling different kinds of stories at different lengths, learn how to set the scope of your plot, and identify the secret sauce that makes stories of any size emotionally resonant.

Armed with these tools, we’ll also discuss marketing, pricing, and the best ways to strategically leverage both shorter and longer works to hook new readers—and keep them as avid fans for life.
